BOOK ONE – UPDATED AND REVISED EDITION
How to Flourish and thrive in a Fast-Changing World

Do you look to the future with hope – or, like so many, with fear?

Is the world changing faster than you can keep up with? Are new technologies, uncertainty, and the pace of change making you feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed?

Futurize Yourself is a practical and deeply personal guide that helps you pause, take perspective, and reconnect with yourself and your future, so you can look towards it with more confidence, clarity, and purpose.

Through Tom Meyers’ own journey from crisis to clarity, and a transformative four-step framework, you will learn how to reframe your past, uncover your potential, define what truly matters, and create a DNA for your future – one that helps you make more informed choices, take meaningful decisions, and move forward with confidence.

This is not a book about predicting the future. It is a book about actively taking part in shaping it today. Futurizing yourself is a mindset and a path to becoming future-ready. Because to flourish and thrive in a fast-changing world, you cannot leave your future to chance.

ABOUT THIS BOOK
We are living in a fast-changing and challenging world. For some, this rapid transformation is exciting – full of new possibilities. For others, it feels overwhelming and daunting. What is it for you? Do you feel at ease, or do you find yourself anxious about the future, struggling to keep up, or even paralysed – stuck in uncertainty with no clear way forward or out?

While the challenges I faced over 25 years ago were different from those we encounter today – as you will read further in this book – the experience of feeling stuck, paralysed by uncertainty, fearing the future, and searching for direction is all too familiar to me. Yet, the same purposeful steps that I took back then and share with you in this book, and the process that helped me break free from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to the point of wanting to give up on life, continue to guide me today. They have helped me face and overcome many challenges over the years and also now in these fast-changing, overwhelming and uncertain times. In fact, looking back, every challenge and setback – and there have been quite a few – I’ve tackled in the same futurizing way. It’s only recently that I fully realised this, because the process has become second nature – a mindset I no longer actively think about unless I’m sharing it, as I started to do with my patients and am now doing here.

For example, ever since I began futurizing myself, I no longer fear the future – no matter how grim the world may seem. And when doubt creeps in, when I struggle, or when I feel stuck – whether in a personal or professional challenge – I don’t let it consume me. Instead, I step back, take an overview perspective, and assess the situation. What is really happening here? Is this an obstacle, or an opportunity in disguise? Am I being held back by my past, or is this a moment to realign with the future I have envisioned and am consciously shaping?
If I’ve strayed, I know I must recalibrate. If the challenge is a necessary resistance for growth, I ask myself: Have I taken on too much and need to let go of certain commitments? Or do I need support? In the first 10 years of futurizing myself, I often needed external support. Now, it’s about lowering my biological footprint – reducing the demands on my time and energy to focus on what truly matters. It’s like a mental checklist  – a structured approach to analysing a situation and determining the next step forward. Simple, yet essential. Without it, I would be lost in the sea of challenges, opportunities, and distractions. Without it, I also wouldn’t be able to hold myself accountable – to say ‘no’ when something doesn’t align with my vision, and to feel content, fulfilled, and grateful for the journey, knowing I have stayed true to myself and accomplished what I set out to achieve. In a fast-changing world I can’t control, the process of futurizing myself has allowed me to maintain control over myself and the struggles of life that haven’t become less.

But as I said, this step-by-step process and mindset were only possible after I started to futurize myself. I was facing a deep personal crisis and needed help. That help came from an unlikely source, but I will always be grateful for the coaching I received and which I later distilled into a four-step process that helped me build a solid foundation on which I could envision a way out and forward. A foundation built from, with and on purpose – one that does not alter, yet could be expressed in different ways, enabling me to step back, assess, and navigate life’s challenges with greater clarity and determination, rather than fear.

I didn’t know all of this when I began to futurize myself – I simply followed the process without a clear roadmap. What may look like an instant transformation in this book actually unfolded over more than two decades, and even now, I continue to uncover new layers.
But just as one generation builds upon the wisdom of the last, I have distilled my decades-long journey into a structured framework – so that you don’t have to spend years figuring it out for yourself.

This book shares my story and the steps that helped me take control by creating a strong foundation – one that does not alter over time. I hope that these steps will now become a guide for you as you build your own foundation to help you go forward. Let the process itself also, as it did for me, become a stress-management tool, enabling you to adapt with confidence and purpose in an ever-changing world.
Because without a foundation, a vision, or a goal to aspire to, the future can feel like a black hole – a pit of doom filled with uncertainty, fuelling fear and anxiety. When we don’t know who we are, what we stand for, or what we truly want, we lose our internal compass – the very thing that helps us make sense of the world and navigate it with confidence.

Fear and overwhelm often arise from our inability to control something. Today, we face multiple challenges: on one hand, technological advancements are outpacing our ability to understand and manage them, making the external world feel increasingly unpredictable and chaotic. On the other hand, we have lost connection with ourselves. We’ve lost control over our thoughts, choices and direction. No wonder so many people feel overwhelmed, anxious about the future, struggling to keep up, or even paralysed – stuck in uncertainty with no clear way forward.

For more than 10,000 years, we have focused on adapting the outside world to suit our needs, without fully realising the consequences – until now. As a result, we find ourselves with an outdated inner foundation, one that lacks the capacity to respond to accelerating change and the shifting demands of modern life.

The world we've created is now moving faster than we can adapt to it. It's time for us to take control – not over the world, but over ourselves.

Futurize Yourself isn’t just another self-help book; it’s a guide to overcoming a growing problem – the mismatch between who we are and the fast-changing world around us. It provides a practical framework for navigating change with confidence and purpose – not through radical transformation, but through gradual, meaningful steps forward.

Whether you are seeking clarity, greater fulfilment, improved health, a career shift, or simply the ability to embrace uncertainty, this book provides the tools to move forward with intention – one step at a time.

The Futurizing Yourself framework is a four-step process that empowers you to take control of your evolution. It’s about more than just solving short-term problems – it’s about breaking free from outdated patterns, resolving the growing mismatch between yourself and a rapidly changing world, and creating a Fitfull Future – one where you flourish and thrive from within.

It’s about progress, not perfection – about building a future that is better than today. Not through utopian ideals, but through practical, continuous self-betterment, endorsing a protopian future – one created from, with and on purpose.
HOW THIS BOOK IS STRUCTURED
This book is divided into two parts:

Part One is personal – I take you through my own journey of transformation. I share the struggles I faced, the moments of insight that changed everything, and the practical steps that helped me move forward. Throughout, I’ve included moments of reflection to encourage you to pause and consider how these ideas relate to your own life.

Part Two shifts the focus to you. Here, I guide you through the Futurizing Yourself framework, step by step, with structured questions designed to help you actively apply the process to your own journey.

I don’t and won’t promise quick fixes or unrealistic solutions, but I will equip you with the mindset and skills to adapt, grow, flourish and thrive – in harmony with yourself, others, and the world around you. Because the future is, as I like to say, y’our future. You do not exist in isolation. Your future is interwoven with others, with society, and with the world itself.

A key focus of this book is strengthening your connection to your future self – the person you aspire to be – while also fostering meaningful connections with others and the world around you. Research shows that when these connections are strong, your decisions align more with your long-term goals, leading to greater clarity, balance and resilience.

At its core, Futurizing Yourself is about taking charge of your life – your future in the making – from, with and on purpose. Rather than being pushed forward into the unknown or paralysed by uncertainty, you first define what you want – your preferred future.
A future founded on that which does not alter, but a future that can be expressed in different ways, helping you align your choices, decisions and actions with who you want and need to become.

Because the future is not something that just happens to you – it’s something you create, one step at a time – from, with and on purpose.
The question is: What future do you want and need? And will you act upon it?
MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR TO RETURNING READERS
When I first wrote Futurize Yourself ten years ago, I had no knowledge of futures thinking, nor did I anticipate how the methodology I had distilled from my own experiences – Futurizing Yourself – would evolve into something far greater: a framework for engaging in protopian thinking – a process of self-betterment, one step at a time, towards a preferred future – and a guide to navigating life in the 21st century and beyond.

The first edition was entirely focused on the three questions that saved my life. At the time, I was simply documenting my experience – how those three questions gave me insight into my potential and how to use it to change my life with purpose and meaning – hoping it might help someone else. And it did.

What I didn't know then, and couldn't have foreseen, is how Futurizing Yourself would become even more relevant in my life and that of others. In today's fast-changing, complex and ambiguous world, every aspect of our lives is being reshaped by automation, artificial intelligence, datafication and an accelerating pace of technological advancement that has outpaced our own evolution.

In a time when the future feels more uncertain than ever before, Futurizing Yourself has become a lifeline; something to hold onto – a structure that is Good, Resilient, Evolvable, Actionable and Transcendent (See my second book, The Futures Effect). A foundation that remains stable even as everything around it changes – a constant that serves as a stress-management tool for the future. More than that, it has become a foundation upon which we can consciously shape our own evolution.

As I revisited my work, I realised that as I had evolved, so had my understanding of the process. I came to see that the entire journey – from being asked, "What are you doing here?" to "What are you waiting for?" (as you will discover in Part One) – had been crucial. It wasn't just about the three questions; it was a complete process, with distinct yet interconnected stages.

So, this second edition could not simply be a revision. I had to evolve it, as so much had changed – including me. While the essence of Futurizing Yourself remains the same, it had to be expressed differently. I revisited the framework, saw it had four distinct, practical steps, rewrote the context in which my story unfolds, and restructured the lessons to make them even more readily applicable to today's world.
In the end, this edition has become:
  • More relatable – My story is told against the backdrop of today's challenges and the uncertainties of the future, making it more relevant to the realities we all face.
  • More structured – Concepts that were once abstract are now woven into a step-by-step framework.
  • More integrated – Science, psychology and futures thinking methodologies are embedded throughout, because personal evolution doesn't happen in isolation.
  • More urgent – In today's rapidly changing world, adaptation is not optional. We must evolve with confidence and purpose, rather than react in fear or uncertainty.
Not 15 years, but now more than 25 years of applying the Futurize Yourself process – set against the backdrop of current and emerging changes and challenges – this edition is here to help you take control of the future by giving it direction and approaching it step by step in the present.

So don't be deceived by the title. This book is more about what you do today. Because it is what you do today – the choices you make, the decisions you take, and the actions you follow through on – that determine your future.
But how can you make the right choices if you don't know what future you want? If you don't have a direction – a scenario of the future you can steer yourself towards?

How do you know what a preferred future is if you don't know what you aspire to, what inspires you, or what you need to be content, fulfilled and healthy?

Since the first edition of this book in 2018, many other great works have been published on the topic of the future self – envisioning who you will become in order to create greater direction, continuity and purpose in your life today. However, these books are often written by scientists who provide the research and theory behind personal evolution and future-oriented thinking.

Personally, I've loved reading them, as they confirm that what I experienced and what I share isn't just another theory – it's a real, tested process based on fundamental truths.

But this book is different. Unlike those works, this isn't about the science – I'm not a scientist. Instead, this is a practical guide and a source of inspiration, written from experience. It's a 'how-to' book – not based on theory or hearsay, but from someone who has lived it, is living it, and has embodied the Futurize Yourself process for over 25 years now.

This updated edition was needed for several reasons. I wanted to integrate what I've learned about the process over the years. I also wanted to explain how the Futurize Yourself concept is more than just another personal development tool. Something that has become clear only recently is how it offers a way out of our current predicament: the accelerating pace with which technology is changing the immediate and long-term challenges we face. The changing demands on us cannot be solved with old ways of thinking. We need a new way forward.

Whether this is your first time reading Futurize Yourself or you're returning for a deeper dive, I invite you to fully engage with this process – to challenge yourself, to think bigger, and to evolve from, with and on purpose.

Step into y’our future with clarity, resilience and intention.
